Latex Pupa

Few moments in fly fishing are as explosive as a caddis emergence. When Trichoptera pupae cut loose from their cases and drive hard toward the surface, trout and grayling go into a feeding frenzy that can last minutes — or hours.

The Latex Caddis Pupa is tied to be right there, in that critical window between bottom and surface, where the biggest fish feed with completeabandon.

The segmented latex body is the key. It replicates the translucent, slightly swollen abdomen of a natural pupa with a realism that dubbed bodies simply cannot match. Under water, in the light, it glows. Fish don’t refuse it — they eat it.

Target species:

Brown trout (Salmo trutta), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), grayling (Thymallus thymallus). An outstanding pattern for wild brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in smaller sizes (#14–#16).

Best conditions:

Late spring through early autumn — peak caddis season. Evening hatches are the classic time, but don’t overlook mid-morning emergences on overcast days. Especially productive in warm, stable weather when water temperatures are between 12–18°C and caddis activity is at its highest. Also highly effective fished as a searching pattern on slower, cloudy days throughout summer.

Water types:

Medium to fast freestone rivers, tailwaters, and spring creeks with clean gravel and rocky substrate. Thrives in riffles, runs, and the seams between fast and slow current. Works well in the film just below the surface during active hatches.

Countries & regions:

Central Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia), the Alpine rivers of Switzerland, Germany, and northern Italy, the limestone streams of Poland, Scandinavian rivers (Norway, Sweden), UK (chalk streams of southern England, spate rivers of Scotland and Wales), France (Normandy, Brittany, Jura), USA (Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountain states) — wherever caddis hatches drive selective surface feeding.

How to fish it:

During a hatch, dead-drift it just below the surface film on a greased leader — deadly when fish are visibly slashing at emerging pupae.

Outside of hatch time, fish it on a short dropper below a heavier nymph, letting it swing and rise at the end of the drift to imitatean ascending pupa. A small twitch at the critical moment can trigger savage takes.

When the surface erupts and nothing else is working — tie on the

Latex Caddis Pupa. It was designed for exactly that moment.
